Ms. Benita Gordon began her career as a substitute teacher and teacher's aide at Even Start working with special need students for the Bessemer Board of Education.  She also worked as a part-time  secretary at the Central Office.  Gordon is going into her 18th year as the physical education teacher at Greenwood Elementary School.  She also has nine years of experience coaching girls' basketball ranging from AAU to High School Varsity.


Ms. Benita Gordon is a product of the Bessemer School System. She graduated from Jess Lanier High School in 1996. Gordon received a full basketball scholarship to Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Health and Physical Education. Coach Gordon also received her Master's of Education in Physical Education from Alabama Sate University. She is entering her 18th year of teaching physical education at Greenwood School.

She loves educating and mentoring today's students to become tomorrows leaders.  Her goal is to help students identify what they love about exercise, set goals for healthy eating, impliment life skills for them and their families, and fully understand the benefits of being a physically educated person.

Gordon was a receipient of Walmart's Teacher of the Year and Who's Who Among Teachers.  She's also the site coordinator for Jump Rope for Heart, Scale Back Alabama, HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living), and Fuel to Play 60.
