Ms. Benita Gordon began her career as a substitute teacher and teacher's aide at Even Start working with special need students in Bessemer City School system.  She also worked part-time as a secretary at the Central Office.  Gordon is going into her 17th year as the physical education teacher at Greenwood Elementary School.  She also has nine years of experience coaching girls' basketball ranging from AAU to High School Varsity.


Ms. Benita Gordon is a product of the Bessemer School System. She graduated from Jess Lanier High School in 1996. Gordon received a full basketball scholarship to Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Health and Physical Education. Coach Gordon also received her Master's of Education in Physical Education from Alabama Sate University. She is entering her 17th year as the ONLY Physical Education Teacher at Greenwood School. Coach Gordon is one of the former coaches of the Girl's Basketball at Davis Middle School now known as Bessemer City Middle and head girls’ varsity coach at Bessemer City High School. 

She loves educating and mentoring today's students to become tomorrows leaders.  Her goal is to help students identify what they love about exercise, set goals for healthy eating, impliment life skills for them and their families, and fully understand the benefits of being a physically educated person.

Gordon was a receipient of Walmart's Teacher of the Year and Who's Who Among Teachers.  She's also the site coordinator for Jump Rope for Heart and Scale Back Alabama.
